Appenninica MTB Stage Race is set for a five-star edition

On July 20, 2019, the Appenninica MTB Stage Race adventure officially started from Bologna with a 12-kilometre time trial up to the summit of San Luca to mark the debut of this new mountain bike stage race on both the Italian and international mtb marathon scene.

Five years later, the Appenninica MTB Stage Race is now a solid organization that’s able to attract athletes from around the world. This unique promotional driver for the Emilia-Romagna Apennines highlights the landscapes and places still unexplored by the general public to paint a picture of the unparalleled outdoor offerings this area has for summertime visitors.

Five years later, on Thursday, July 20 — again in Bologna — the Appenninica MTB Stage Race unveiled plans and details at the ExtraBo headquarters in Piazza del Nettuno for the 2023 edition, September 4-9. The new six-stage format promises fun and entertainment for competitors ready to challenge themselves and their rivals, from Castelnovo ne’ Monti to Lizzano in Belvedere.

Doing the honours at the Appenninica MTB Stage Race presentation was Bologna City Councillor for Sport, Roberta Li Calzi, Emilia-Romagna Head of the Political Secretariat of the Presidency, Giammaria Manghi, and President of the Bologna Metropolitan City Tourist Destination, Mattia Santori. In addition, one of the organizers, Milena Bettocchi, and the president of off-road riding for the Italian Cycling Federation, Massimo Ghirotto, also shared their thoughts

A POSTCARD OF THE APENNINES

When the organizers of A.S.D. Happy Trail MTB conceived the Appenninica MTB Stage Race in 2019, the ambition was to create a small “Cape Epic”, but with a strong Italian flare: a demanding and challenging stage race that would showcase the beauty of the Emilia-Romagna Apennines while communicating the sense of welcoming and hospitality that these regions are known for worldwide. During the past five years, athletes from five continents — from Australia to Israel via South Africa, Argentina, and the United States — have participated in the stage race.

All of them got a taste of the Emilia-Romagna Apennines by riding technical and challenging trails that are nothing less than those of the Alps, but are far less known to the public. Evidence of the excellent tourist impact generated by the Appenninica MTB Stage Race in recent years comes in the form of stories of athletes who have extended their holidays in the area following the event, or who have embarked on business partnerships with local farms.

The Appenninica MTB Stage Race sold out of its 150 participant entries in five editions, with 28 nations represented in the 2022 edition. Many athletes have been at the start several times, thus demonstrating their love for the routes, landscapes and family atmosphere provided by the Appenninica MTB Stage Race caravan.

Over the years, thanks to the partnership between the organizers and #InEmiliaRomagna, the brand belonging to the Emilia-Romagna Tourism Board, the stage race has been able to showcase the beating heart of the Apennines. This has enabled area leaders to promote sport tourism, both local and on a grander scale, in key locations around the area. This is part of a long-term project aiming to create a true regional brand for the Apennines.

THE ROUTE

The race route travels from Castelnovo ne’ Monti to Lizzano in Belvedere, through the intriguing Fiumalbo and the historic Appenninica MTB Stage Race venue, Fanano. The 2023 race route covers about 400 kilometres and more than 14,000 meters of total elevation gain throughout the Emilia-Romagna Apennines.

Beginning with the 2023 edition, the six-stage format will make its debut and take the place of the previous seven-stage format. Organizers decided on this change in order to ease logistics for the athletes, while maintaining the same level of difficulty that’s elevated the Appenninica MTB Stage Race to international status throughout the past five years.

Stage 1 – La Matildica – 57 km with 1850 m of elevation gain

Monday, September 4: Castelnovo ne’ Monti – Castelnovo ne’ Monti

FOUR-WAY CHALLENGE

Between September 4 and 9, it will be a four-way challenge on the trails of the Emilia-Romagna Apennines. Starting in this 2023 edition will be all the male winners from the first four editions who will be ready to do battle and deliver an encore performance, which is something that hasn’t happened yet.

Among them, the front-runner is Colombian racer, Diego Arias, winner of the last edition, who’s returning to Appenninica to notch a second victory. He’ll have to face Dutch rider, Hans Becking, who’s eager to leave his second mark after success in 2020. Joining them in battle are the winners of the two remaining editions: German racer, Felix Fritzsch, who was king in 2021, and Austrian rider, Lukas Kaufmann, winner of the first edition in 2019.

Behind these four, the Italian racers, Martino Tronconi and Nicola Taffarel, will also play their hand for the win. Frenchman Miguel Martinez, gold medallist at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and winner of the 2022 Cape Epic in the masters’ category along with Mirko Pirazzoli, seems to be the first outsider.

The big favourite among the women is German racer, Naima Diesner, winner in both 2022 and 2021. Diesner is aiming for a hattrick for her third edition. Outsiders who could spoil Diesner’s plans include Australian rider, Imogen Smith, and Dutch racer, Anouk Van den Bielerd.

THE JERSEYS

As in previous editions, Natali Sports Wear will be the technical sponsor of the Appenninica MTB Stage Race leader jerseys. The blue jersey represents the leader in the men’s general classification, while the pink jersey will be worn by the leader in the women’s GC. Three more jerseys will be awarded in the race: Master (green), Grand Master (orange) and Great Grand Master (lilac).

THE APPENNINICA FAMILY

During the past five years, the Appenninica MTB Stage Race family has grown not only with the many athletes who have joined the race, but also thanks to the partners who have supported the event. Sustaining sponsors include carbon fibre wheel manufacturer, 9th Wave CyclingNatali Sports Wear and Barbieri PNK.

Long term partners of the Appenninica MTB Stage Race are Barilla and the bike care brand, Squirt CyclingEnervit, the leading Italian brand for sports nutrition, and Lavor, the leading manufacturer of high-pressure cleaning machines, have recently joined the family.

The Appenninica 2023 kickoff takes place under the Bismantova Rock

The mention of Bismantova Rock immediately brings to mind the Appenninica MTB Stage Race. The places that were once fiefdoms of Matilda of Canossa serve as the home territory for this mountain bike stage race in the Emilia-Romagna ApenninesCastelnovo ne’ Monti has hosted at least one stage of Appenninica every year and is now preparing to hold the 2023 edition, scheduled for September 4-9, 2023.

This town in the Reggio Emilia province, made famous by the Bismantova Rock that inspired Dante’s Purgatory, will host the preliminary operations of the Appenninica MTB Stage Race 2023, starting on Sunday, September 3rd, with the arrival of the athletes. Also on that date, there will be Appenninica Lovers, a meeting open to all and dedicated to amateur cyclists on the route of the first stage race.

The official start is scheduled for Monday, September 4, with an opening loop stage covering 57 kilometers and featuring 1900 meters of total elevation gainLa Matildica is a deceptively challenging section with long climbs and highly technical descents. The athletes will face a downhill single trail to cross the Tresinaro River before climbing towards Carpinete Castle. The striking passage under the iconic Bismantova Rock will precede the athletes’ return to Castelnovo ne’ Monti.

Finding the right rhythm with Appenninica will be crucial because, on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, the extremely demanding Mountain Queen Stage is scheduled. Covering 89 kilometers and featuring 3250 meters of elevation gain, this stage will start from Castelnovo ne’ Monti and reach Fiumalbo, offering breathtaking views and a route mostly above 1500 meters of altitude. The route will include challenging sections such as the Cisa Pass, the Mount Cusna area, and the Radici Pass before reaching Pievepelago via a single track.

Castelnovo ne’ Monti welcomes the Appenninica MTB Race again this year with great pleasure. Among the many sporting events that we will host in the summer as a ‘town for sport,’ Appenninica holds great importance due to its international dimension, and mountain biking has experienced exponential growth in recent years. There are numerous fans who ride our roads and trails, appreciating and enhancing our territory and its environmental quality,” says Enrico Bini, the mayor of Castelnovo ne’ Monti.

CASTELNOVO NE’ MONTI, IN THE SHADOW OF THE BISMANTOVA ROCK

Castelnovo ne’ Monti and the surrounding territories are rich in history and magic, starting with the Bismantova Rock. According to tradition, this rock inspired Dante’s Purgatory during the poet’s stay in 1306, as mentioned in Canto IV of the Divine Comedy’s Purgatory. The Castelnovo area also boasts several fortresses and castles that were once part of the reign of Matilda of Canossa between 1000 and 1100 AD.

The medieval town’s historical center is definitely worth a visit. It has been renovated in recent years, offering truly characteristic views. One of these views is the Palazzo Ducale, located amidst the green gardens of Bagnolo. Built by the Este family as a symbol of their domination over the territory, it now serves as Castelnovo’s City Hall.

Clean to the goal thanks to Lavor’s Bike Washing, the new partner of Appenninica

In a race as long, demanding, and stressful as the Appenninica MTB Stage Race, the details make the difference. From the choice of tires to nutrition, and through the ability to manage energy, bike maintenance has no secondary value. Therefore, cleaning the bike is paramount at the end of each stage.

In the 2023 edition of the Appenninica MTB Stage Race, Lavor, an Italian company based in Pegognaga, will offer the Bike Wash service as one of the leading manufacturers of high-pressure cleaning machines. As a valuable Supplier Sponsor of the event scheduled from September 4 to 9, Lavor will ensure perfect bike cleaning and maintenance day by day.

Founded in 1975, Lavor is among the leading players in the worldwide cleaning industry, specializing in producing hot and cold-water pressure washers, vacuum cleaners, steam generators, and Floor Care products. The company is part of the Comet Group, based in Emilia-Romagna, and operates in more than 130 Countries worldwide with a team of 750 people.

The partnership with Appenninica MTB Stage Race marks Lavor’s first time in mountain biking, but not in sports. The Italian company is also a premium partner of the LCR Honda MotoGP team and a sponsor of the Desert Endurance Motorsport team, which took part in the Dakar Classic in 2023.

We are very excited to welcome Lavor to the Appenninica MTB Stage Race family. Thanks to them, we cover an important aspect of a stage race like ours: bike cleaning. We are happy to bring them closer to the world of mountain biking and to provide our athletes with state-of-the-art, modern machinery for cleaning mud and dirt,” say Milena Bettocchi and Beppe Salerno, co-organizers of Appenninica MTB Stage Race.

The Lavor brand has always been linked to the world of sports because there are many similarities between the values of sports and Lavor’s world: dynamism, the strive for constant improvement, teamwork to achieve goals, to name a few. In addition, our products are a perfect for cleaning sports tools as well as venues. Therefore, athletes are a key target audience for us: these are some of the reasons that led us to approach the world of MTB, an adrenaline sport for true sports lovers, in which our products can be of great help in always keeping the bike clean and ready for use,” says Dante Rossetti, Lavor’s marketing manager.

Italy sets ambitious goals for Appenninica with Tronconi and Taffarel

Faenza-born athlete Martino Tronconi and Nicola Taffarel from the Cannondale MTB Professional Team will be participating in the Appenninica MTB Stage Race (September 4-9, 2023) for the first time, aiming to make their mark by focusing on stage victories while also keeping an eye on the overall standings

After years of anticipation, the time has finally come. Martino Tronconi and the Appenninica MTB Stage Race have been acquainted since 2020, but the athlete’s scheduling conflicts had prevented him from participating in the stage race located so close to his home in the Emilia-Romagna Apennines. However, 2023 presents the perfect opportunity for Tronconi to embark on this adventure, not only as an athlete but also as the Team Manager of the newly formed Cannondale MTB Professional Team.

From September 4 to 9, 2023, Martino Tronconi, alongside Nicola Taffarel, will show up at Appenninica MTB Stage Race with the ambition to challenge their competitors every step of the way.

The Appenninica MTB Stage Race has always enticed me, partly due to its proximity to my home, but mainly because previous participants have spoken highly of its organization and the stunning route. After a long pursuit, we have finally secured our presence this year,” says the Team Manager of the Cannondale MTB Professional Team.

Tronconi and Taffarel certainly won’t be mere bystanders but will look to make their mark on the race, which covers 400 km and boasts a total elevation gain of 14,000 meters across six stages.

Our minimum goal is to secure a stage victory. After the initial 2-3 stages, we will assess our position in the general classification and, if favorable, aim for a prestigious placement,” expresses a determined Martino Tronconi.

The duo from the Cannondale MTB Professional Team possesses the ideal blend of experience and a hunger for success. Previously, 27-year-old Martino Tronconi has performed admirably in similar races, achieving third place at the Swiss Epic 2022 alongside Dario Cherchi and third place at the Andorra MTB Classic 2021 with Johnny Cattaneo.

The Appenninica MTB Stage Race’s route is one of the most challenging in the world of stage races, particularly due to the unique demands of tackling altitude differences in the Apennines compared to the Alps or Dolomites, making the stages significantly more demanding. I believe that reigning champion Diego Arias will be the athlete to beat. On cards, he has something extra, but we will strive to make it difficult for him, working together as a team,” analyzes Tronconi.

The team will approach the Appenninica MTB Stage Race as an opportunity to fine-tune their condition for the end of the season. After the World Championships in Glasgow, in which they hope to participate in the Italian national team jersey, Tronconi and Taffarel will resume training in mid-August and arrive at the start line in Castelnovo ne’ Monti after the Kronplatz King Marathon.

Appenninica MTB Stage Race will be a significant fixture in our second half of the season, providing valuable preparation for our upcoming competitions. I believe that tackling a race like this individually, rather than as a duo, brings about substantial tactical changes, with different race dynamics that we must smartly exploit,” explains the Team Manager of the Cannondale MTB Professional Team.

Undoubtedly, after years of anticipation, Martino Tronconi will give his all to ensure that his encounter with the Appenninica MTB Stage Race becomes an unforgettable one.

Enervit becomes Official Nutrition Partner of Appenninica MTB Stage Race

Enervit has been confirmed as the Official Nutrition Partner of Appenninica MTB Stage Race, set to take place from September 4-9, 2023. The race organization will donate a portion of the registration fees to support the people of Emilia-Romagna who have been affected by the recent floods.

The Appenninica MTB Stage Race family is expanding, and it is thrilled to welcome an esteemed partner from the sports nutrition industry. For the upcoming edition scheduled for September 4-9, 2023Enervit will join forces with the organizers of A.S.D. Happy Trail MTB. An Italian leading brand in sports supplementation and functional nutrition, Evervit is also a partner of the Italian National Cycling Team.

This prestigious partnership signifies the increasing visibility and credibility of the race within the Apennines of Emilia-Romagna, as it enters its fifth edition. With over 40 years of experience in the industry, Enervit is the ideal nutrition partner to support the competitors of the Appenninica MTB Stage Race. The company possesses the know-how to design, test, develop, and produce innovative and high-quality functional foods and supplements.

We are delighted to welcome Enervit into our family. Their reputation as a world leader in meeting the nutritional needs of athletes is well-known, and they will supply their best products before, during, and after the competition. In a challenge like the Appenninica MTB Stage Race, success not only depends on preparation and mental strength but also on the careful management of energy throughout each stage,” says Milena Bettocchi and Beppe Salerno, co-organizers of the Appenninica MTB Stage Race.

Paolo Calabresi, Enervit Sport & Fitness Marketing Director, stated: “We could not pass up the opportunity to support this unique MTB race in Italy for the second consecutive year, characterized by its traveling stages. It is a fantastic competition that attracts numerous foreign athletes in a challenging and exciting outdoor environment.

A THOUGHT FOR ROMAGNA

Registration for the Appenninica MTB Stage Race is open until June 30th, 2023, during the “Regular Registration” phase. As in previous editions, the organizers have opted for the individual formula, with a maximum of 150 registered participants. This decision aims to avoid overcrowding on the trails and ensure a high standard of riding support for all participants.

In a show of solidarity with the people of Emilia-Romagna affected by the devastating floods in May, the organizers of A.S.D. Happy Trail MTB have decided to allocate a fee of €100 for each new registration until the end of the registration phase. The funds will be donated to the Emilia-Romagna Agency for Territorial Security and Civil Protection to aid in the restoration of the areas impacted by the environmental disaster.

We are deeply saddened by the events that unfolded in our region and stand in solidarity with the people of Romagna. By allocating a portion of the new registration fees, we aim to support the reconstruction efforts and provide concrete help to the many families affected by this catastrophic event,” stated Milena Bettocchi and Beppe Salerno, co-organizers of the Appenninica MTB Stage Race.

The Champions are coming home: Diesner and Arias say yes to Appenninica 2023

There are places destined to break into people’s hearts and stick there. Experiences you are looking to relive as soon and as much as possible, because after all, they feel like home to you. Maybe it’s because of the family atmosphere among the Appenninica MTB Stage Race competitors or the beauty of the Emilia-Romagna Apennines, but there are more and more athletes returning every year to take the start of the “Italian Cape Epic”.

Among them, from September 4 to 9, 2023, will be last year’s winners, Diego Arias and Naima Diesner. Both dominated Appenninica MTB Stage Race 2022, winning several stages and securing a commanding lead already early on; both will return this year to confirm themselves and relive the sweet memories that this stage race has left fixed in their minds.

Appenninica MTB Stage Race is a challenging race, – says Naima Diesner, also the winner of the 2021 edition, – set in beautiful places and with a superb organization. Like a little kid looking forward to Christmas at the start of the year, I am already excited for Appenninica 2023 and to catch up with riders, staff and friends, I met”.

Last year, I had a lot of fun, even though I had to work hard for it. It is a race that I am recommending to other athletes because it is a special test, with varied and fun trails”, said the Hubbers-Polimedical Colombian, Marathon vice-World Champion in 2021.

Last year, the Colombian not only won the final classification but also took five stage victories, proving to be comfortable on the routes of the Emilia-Romagna Apennines. This year he will be at the start knowing part of the route already, and being able to manage the effort over one less day of racing, according to the new format proposed by the organizers.

“With my team, we always set out to win, even though our opponents never make it easy on us. Knowing the area better will definitely help me to manage myself better, but I also know the participants’ level will grow further. The format with six stages instead of seven will help the amateurs, and their desire to live their experience at the fullest. However, it will also be one less day of effort for me, which will mean managing my energy differently”, analyses Arias.

The Queen of Appenninica 2021 and 2022 is also looking forward to testing the new format.

It will be nice to witness the adaptation of the race format first-hand. Six days of racing is still a long time, and I imagine the tracks to be of high quality „epicness“. But let’s be honest: I am so in love with the Appenninica Stage Race, I would probably also line up if you double the race days”, said Naima Diesner.

Regarding her ambitious goals, the German rider will look to approach things differently.

I’ll do my best riding and hopefully contribute to an exciting race. However, the beauty of stage racing lies in its various aspects that may challenge you along the track and at the end of the day, I hope to reach the finish line exhausted but with a big smile on my face”, says Diesner.

The same smile that will be on the faces of Diego Arias and Naima Diesner as they return to Appenninica MTB Stage Race.

The Appenninici – Tim and Louise: from Cape Epic to Appenninica, always in pairs

Many stories of sports and life can be found among the Appenninica MTB Stage Race riders. Tim and Louise Ferreira have taken part in multiple MTB stage races before they found Appenninica, developing a deep connection to the event and the majestic Emilia-Romagna Apennines

Effort and success are better when shared, also in MTB stage races where it’s sometimes possible to compete in pairs. On its part, Appenninica MTB Stage Race embraced the formula of individual racing after its first edition.

Nevertheless, riders are still allowed to tackle the race as a pair, supporting each other through the ups and downs of the journey. For Tim and Louise Ferreira, who finally got the chance to participate in the event in 2022 after two years of pandemic-related postponements, the opportunity to ride together through the Emilia-Romagna Apennines was too good to pass up.

We have ridden numerous private tours in Europe, following parts of the Tour de France in 2009 and 2011. In Italy, we rode from Sicily to Rome and then from Genoa to Venice, but we wanted to tour it by mountain bike, so we found information about Appenninica MTB Stage Race. We got in touch with Beppe and started the planning, but the arrival of Covid forced us to postpone participation twice before we could travel again in 2022”, said Tim and Louise.

The South African couple has an impressive track record in the sport, having participated in multiple events like the Cape Epic (Louise even finished it five times consecutively), Joberg2c, Sanic2c, Berg&Bush, and Wines2Whales. They have added the Appenninica MTB Stage Race’s medal to their tally in 2022, and are looking forward to another ride in the Apennines in 2023.

We both have ridden the Cape Epic and participated in several events in South Africa, stage races of 3-4 days but also 9 days. Appenninica is very different from all of these because it has much longer and steeper climbs than what we are used to, but also the landscapes and villages are very different from what you can find in other stage races around the world”, said the pair.

Our first experience of Appenninica was incredible. The atmosphere was amazing – the staff and other riders were so positive and helpful. We were very fortunate with the weather conditions and also did not experience any mechanical problems, which was a bonus. We had never been to the Emilia Romagna region before. The places we visited at the Appenninica event were beautiful and we really enjoyed the experience. That’s why we’re taking part again in 2023”, said Tim and Louise.

Of course, Tim and Louise will ride together again this year, facing the challenges that the Emilia-Romagna Apennines will place on their path as a couple.

“We have ridden together for many years, but also individually. Riding this event together was helpful because it allowed us to help each other where needed. We know each other’s riding strengths and understand each other well”, they say.

Ultimately, sharing the effort, sweat and success makes everything more special.

The Appenninici – Jeremy Mahot: mountain bike as a social message

Many stories of sports and life can be found among the Appenninica MTB Stage Race riders. Jeremy Mahot took up mountain biking during the Covid period as an antidote to the death of a close friend, and in 2022 he concluded Appenninica to raise awareness about the problem of depression

There are many motivations for someone to take up a sport. Some develop a passion early on and others approach it with time. Those who do it to get physically fit and those who do it to find inner peace, to take their mind off life’s everyday problems.

Appenninica MTB Stage Race 2022 finisher Jeremy Mahot was introduced to mountain biking during the hard months of the Covid quarantine when gyms were closed, and one could only get an hour of airtime to play outdoor sports. Before then, he had never played this sport, but love was at first sight.

It was a bad time, and a friend invited me to mountain biking. Unfortunately, not long after I started, another close friend lost his life due to depression caused by a concussion. He could no longer find peace with himself. At that moment, mountain biking saved my life, and I felt a duty to tell everyone about the positive impact this sport can have on a person’s life, as well as the social interaction with other bikers”, says Jeremy Mahot.

To testify to this, Jeremy Mahot got into mountain bike stage racing, participating in and completing the Bike Transalp in 2021. From there, the idea of sharing his adventures on social media and a blog, explaining why he was doing it and showing how everyone can achieve a goal if they want to, even finding the motivation to get through the darkest moments.

I want to make people aware that concussion is a major trauma, not to be taken lightly, because it can bring problems such as depression, irritability, and lack of concentration. Talking is a great help to vent. I want everyone to understand that so many things can help to feel good. You have to be willing to put yourself out there. Within the circles of Mtb fans, you can find people willing to talk and listen”, explains the French rider based on the United Kingdom.

On his journey-testimony, Jeremy Mahot crossed paths with Appenninica MTB Stage Race, finding that sense of family and community he sought.

I enjoyed Apenninica for the beautiful scenery and host cities, and it reinforced my belief that the Mtb community is unique. I now have friends all over the world with whom I talk regularly. I will go back in the future because the family atmosphere is unique. I left alone and returned with many brothers and sisters with whom I shared an experience”, he says.

From Castelnovo to Vidiciatico, Appenninica 2023 promises thrills and spills

Organizers have unveiled the route for the 2023 Appenninica MTB Stage Race, scheduled for September 4-9, which features six stages measuring 400 km and 14 thousand meters of elevation gain. In addition to Castelnovo ne’ Monti and Vidiciatico, stage venues include Fanano and the new Fiumalbo

Race organizers have promised that “reducing the format of one stage will not make the race any easier.” This promise has largely been fulfilled, judging from a first look at the 2023 Appenninica MTB Stage Race route.

Riders will have to conquer 400 kilometres and 14,000 meters of climbing over the course of six stages to earn the finisher’s medal of the 2023 edition, scheduled for Sept. 4-9, 2023. The Emilia-Romagna Apennines will be the judges of an epic challenge among enchanted landscapes, Apennine ridges, and beautiful Italian towns.

Same as last year, the stage race will start from Castelnovo ne’ Monti, in the shadow of the Pietra di Bismantova. Returning stage venues include Fanano, a historic passage in the Appenninica MTB Stage Race and Vidiciatico, a hamlet in Lizzano in Belvedere that will host the grand finale, same as it did in 2022. New for 2023 is Fiumalbo, a historic village in the Modena Apennines located on the border with Tuscany.

The new format allows us to spread out the challenges better than in years past. The Queen Stage, scheduled for the second day, is slightly shorter and less challenging than before, but the following two days will compel racers to manage their efforts. The result is a demanding middle part of the race, with 400 kms and 14 thousand meters of total elevation gain,” explained Milena Bettocchi and Beppe Salerno, co-organizers of the Appenninica MTB Stage Race.

SIX STAGES TO TACKLE AT FULL SPEED

The start is set for Monday, September 4, from Castelnovo ne’ Monti with 56 km and 1,800 meters of climbing beginning at the foot of the Pietra di Bismantova and traversing the lands of Matilda di Canossa. Compared to 2022, the La Matildica route has been further improved, with alternating climbs and descents that aren’t long, but they are challenging.

With practically no time to settle into race mode on Tuesday, September 5, it’s already time to take on the Mountain Queen Stage. Compared to past editions, the stage is shorter (89 km) but no less challenging with 3200 meters of climbing before reaching the finish line in Fiumalbo.

No time to rest because on Wednesday, September 6, a loop around Fiumalbo will again put racers under pressure. The Tuscany “Incipit” is the newest development for the 2023 edition, with a gradual advance into Tuscany inside the Abetone ski area, 79 km long with 2700 meters of climbing.

Monte Cimone is the big star in the fourth stage on Thursday, Sept. 7, from Fiumalbo to Fanano. There will be three climbs that day along the 57-kilometer route of the Cimone Challenge with 2300 meters of climbing to test the athletes’ legs once again.

For those who like the Appenninica MTB Stage Race’s approach to mountain biking, the stage slated for Friday, September 8, from Fanano to Vidiciatico will be the perfect manifesto. Appenninica Distilled with its 54 km and 2,500 meters of climbing is a combination of everything the Italian stage race has to offer: long and rideable climbs, technical descents, and wonderful views.

The grand finale is booked for Saturday, September 9 on the Monte Pizzo, with start and finish in Vidiciatico, a hamlet in the municipality of Lizzano in Belvedere. Same as last year, the technical 37 kilometres with 1750 meters of climbing will declare the final verdict.

HOW TO REGISTER

After the tremendous success of the Early Bird registration phase, which sold out in just 15 days, it’s now possible to register in the “Regular Registration” phase until May 31, 2023. Same as in the last four editions, organizers have confirmed the solo format and have limited entries to a maximum of 150 participants to avoid overcrowding on the trails and to ensure a high standard of quality in providing support to all participants.

The Appenninici – From Argentina to Italy: Sergio Coratolo in search of his roots

Many stories of sports and life can be found among the Appenninica MTB Stage Race riders. In 2022, Sergio Coratolo combined the stage race in the Emilia-Romagna Apennines with a trip to Sicily, discovering the places of his ancestors
Some people participate in Appenninica MTB Stage Race to experience something out of the ordinary, some to discover new places and some to win a challenge against themselves. And there are those who, like Sergio Coratolo, have extended their journey to Italy from Argentina after the mountain bike stage race to discover their roots.

Sergio Coratolo’s grandfather was a native of Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily. Having decided to cross the ocean for Appenninica, he went to discover the places where his family came from, albeit this wasn’t his first time in Italy.

“I had already been to Italy, I had visited the Alps and Riva del Garda, and before arriving in Bologna for Appenninica I was in Rome with my wife. After finishing the race last September, I spent a few days in Castellammare del Golfo, where my grandfather was born, to discover the places of his childhood. On occasion, I also made a video for my father, who was never lucky enough to be able to go there”, said Coratolo.

Embellished by this romantic appendix, the Appenninica MTB Stage Race experience will also remain in the Argentinean’s heart for giving him a chance to discover the beautiful scenery of the Emilia-Romagna Apennines.

“I learned about Appenninica MTB Stage Race on the web, and since I had already been to the Alps and the Pyrenees, I said this would be an opportunity to know the Apennines. With an Italian passport, I will gladly come to Italy when I can. I’m trying to visit as much as possible”, explained Coratolo.

The Italian stage race experience has been promoted with full marks by Sergio Coratolo, who promises to return.

“I think I will come back to Appenninica. I enjoyed the experience. It is physically demanding but enjoyable because it allows you to meet new people and have a fulfilling experience”, said the Argentinian rider.

There is still so much Italy to discover, after all.
